COSMOS - shine (昭) by ISHII Houtan
A bluish silver light reminiscent of a quiet deep space. As the calligrapher says, it seems that "the empty space swayed, a dot was born..." and to began to shine. The title is "Shine (昭)". The Chinese character "昭" means bright, clear and conspicuous. Invited by meditation by staring at the brilliance which changes its shade depending on the viewing angle or time. Commentary On The "COSMOS" Series
We are pleased to present ISHII Houtan's representative work, "COSMOS" series. The series is created using the technique of painting in the sense of calligraphy. It has been highly praised as contemporary art, winning the Encouragement Prize at the NAU 21 Century Art Coalition Exhibition in 2017.
The material, "Gansai 岩彩" mineral pigment is made by crushing semiprecious stones and various ores such as vermilion, malachite, indigo copper ore and lapis lazuli, and it usually used in Japanese-style painting. The artist has fixed the pigment to the PVC sheet by the original technique. The surface of artworks sparkles various shade depending on the viewing angle, and very visionary.
ISHII is one of the best calligraphers who have been leading avant-garde calligraphy for a long time. He learned calligraphy under UNO Sesson and MIZUKOSHI Bouson who are legend masters of avant-garde calligraphy since the early 1970s (Click here for his profile).
He said that the origin of his expression was Carl Sagan's cosmology, his childhood memories of his time on the bank of Mogami River and the mysterious abstract world of MIYAZAWA Kenji (Click here for the interview).
