Sectional Images - Pure Ego by OGAWA Izan
The moment when I dripped the Sumi ink on the paper, it was complete, and no further work was required. Like a one cut by a sword. An instant encounter. Coincident and inevitable. A flow close to nature. Nature is better than artificial. A person stands. Pure ego is me and also you. There is no need to read characters, but people also say “reading paintings.” Keeping a balance between sensitivity and intelligence is fun.

The Calligrapher's Words
Time flows with space every moment, and momentary phenomena change as a result of dependent origination.
It was May in 2015. The moment I started drawing a spiral by dropping Sumi ink liquid on Repel paper (synthetic paper), I felt that the momentary phenomenon created by the spiral was the accumulation of the past, present, and future, including time and space. I named one cut "Sectional image", and since then, it has become my lifework.
Commentary On The "Sectional images" Series
We are pleased to present the "Sectional images" series, the lifework of OGAWA Izan. OGAWA is an artist who has been active as a calligrapher for about 50 years since the 1970s, and now he is expanding his expression into contemporary art. All the works in this series are created using the synthetic paper called Repel paper as the support and using Sumi ink and mineral pigment.
He says, "Coincidence and inevitability come together in this work. The liquid moves on the paper, and I operate it until the moment when a convincing phenomenon appears. For example, when you're walking, you encounter a nice view, you see it, your thought stops. That's it. I want the moment that we meet something". His understanding of breathing, rhythm, nature, and contingency is a world unique to an artist and calligrapher who has reached a deep place. When you face at his work, various images are evoked. Please feel what is outside of what you know. Don't stand ready or trying to understand.
