Live by KANAMORI Akane
The Calligrapher's Words
There are countless 'live (in kanji character, it is 生)' engraved on this work.

Being unable to cope with my grandfather's death, I continued to write the word 'live' on the canvas to face my emotions. I didn't want to forget everything I felt at this time, whatever it was painfulness, sadness, or loneliness. I unlocked my feelings out on this canvas. To live.

The unevenness that appears due to the overlap of 'live' is my life itself. I strongly felt that expressing was a hope to live for me.

Many people distance themselves from calligraphy works by saying, 'I don't know because I can't read the written words.' Just like painting, you can feel it from the screen and interpret it freely.

It is almost impossible to 'read' in this series. However, here are undoubted 'characters.'

Mother No.1 by KANAMORI Akane
The Calligrapher's Words
After writing the kanji character 'Mother' in the standard script style of calligraphy calmly, I piled the same 'Mother' up over and over with my passion.

What kind of image do you have about mother? Before I gave birth to my daughter, I had a so-called 'Mother = Perfect' idea that 'the mother is kind, always smiling, a role model of children…' But the reality wasn't like that. Every day, I was pressed by time, staring at things I couldn't do, and getting worn out. For mothers around the world, every day is a battle.

Wouldn't it be beautiful to see mothers fighting so hard? I wanted to express our beauty as we were. "Mother = Perfect", I want to break such a fantasy. We do not have to be perfect.

Sectional Images - S-1 Flux by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
The liquid of Sumi ink and silver powder on the repel paper is mixed with each other by my fingers and move to show various figures. My fingers follow the figures as it changes. The work is finished for a moment of my satisfaction. The work flows. The same goes for life.
I didn't aim in this work as a calligraphy work, but when it was exhibited in our group exhibition at Kyukyodo in Ginza, one person commented, "This is indeed a calligraphy work.". For him, this work looked calligraphy.

Sectional Images - Pure Ego by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
The moment when I dripped the Sumi ink on the paper, it was complete, and no further work was required. Like a one cut by a sword. An instant encounter. Coincident and inevitable. A flow close to nature. Nature is better than artificial. A person stands. Pure ego is me and also you. There is no need to read characters, but people also say “reading paintings.” Keeping a balance between sensitivity and intelligence is fun.

Sectional Images - Whereabouts of Heat 013 by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
A circle wraps all and a line separates. Enveloping people creates harmony and peace, and dividing people leads to border and conflict. So I put the circular motion on the base of my work because I see the absoluteness there. On top of that, there is relative change. The thought is reflected in the creation.
This work was born in an encounter with the Repel Paper. Poured Sumi ink on paper. Continue the circular movement to move the liquid with a Sumi ink stick. A sequence of time and space and moments. Every moment lasts forever. My heart shows through the changing phase on the paper. Named “Whereabouts of Heat”.

Sectional Images - Bodhisattvas of the Earth 007 by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
The title "Jiyu 地涌" is derived from the "Bodhisattvas of the Earth 地涌菩薩" as explained in the No. 15. of the Lotus Sutra. It is said that at the latter days of Buddhism, a group of people who believe the spirit of Buddha's "all people can attain Buddhahood" and act for the sake of self and others' well-being will appear from the underground.
This work was born in an encounter with the Repel Paper. Poured Sumi ink on paper. Continue the circular motion to move the liquid with a Sumi ink stick. A sequence of time and space and moments. It changes a moment to continuity. It is a harmony between paper and me as the creator. I listen to the paper's voice. The material matches my concept.

Power of Characters - Wonder by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
What looks useless has a value. Many people think the principle of calligraphy is creating the best "one" artwork with high precision. It aims at the ultimate technique. However, the treasure is hidden inside the excluded works. There is no good or bad thing in shouts of mind. I wrote three letters "Fushigi (wonder) ふしぎ" in a circular motion.

Power of Characters - Heart Bell by OGAWA Izan
The Calligrapher's Commentary
I spread a piece of extravagant Kumo-hada Ma-shi (雲肌麻紙) and stuck on a panel. Then I wrote it holding my breath so as not to disturb the rhythm. I had kept not a "doing" mind but a "being" mind, to blend the letters into space and to be like a gust of wind. There is a work that can only be done at that moment. If it was not that moment, I never could.

Watery Sumi Ink - Between Existence and Non-Existence by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
It might look like the Japanese letter "one (一)," but this is an abstract work. The subtle blue shade of old Sumi ink (pine smoke ink) is beautiful. Watery Sumi ink bleedings are layered and continuity past the area of the paper and hanging scroll. Let's appreciate the invisible margin. According to the calligrapher, it shows "A silent mental landscape with Zen elements in mind". You can look out on this museum piece quietly alone. A contemporary hanging scroll made of silk fabric with a strong blue-green color. 44.9" long, 21.6" wide (114cm x 55cm). Comes in a paulownia box. (After your purchasing, the calligrapher will write his signature on the inside of the box lid.)

Watery Sumi Ink - Existence and Non-Existence-Stillness by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
ISHII Houtan, an artist also calligrapher, has repeatedly experimented with the use of paper, ink, and brushes, and has created many unique techniques. In this work, he ground precious old Sumi ink stick and deepened only the beauty of the bleeding of watery Sumi ink. He just drew a single line in one moment. It looks like a dreamy landscape overlapping ridges and a fog floating on the lake surface. This is the beauty of calligraphy that only he can express. According to the calligrapher, it shows "A quiet mental landscape with Zen elements." This work mounted as a contemporary hanging scroll made of silk cloth in a deep navy color similar to ink black. It is 53.9" long, 18.5" wide (137cm x 47cm). Perfect for tea parties with modern guests and ideal for modern Japanese interiors. A museum piece for you. Comes in a paulownia box. (After your purchasing, the calligrapher will write his signature on the inside of the box lid.)

Watery Sumi Ink - Dawn by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
The title changes "Dawn" to "snowy mountain" when the work is upside down. The image of morning light and night darkness, green summer and snowy winter comes to mind. At the same time, the answerless problem would cross your mind, that is, "Is this a picture or not?" The calligrapher might be seeing the dawn between concrete and abstract, and between "calligraphy" and "non-calligraphy". It is 11.8" height and 9" width. Not mounted. For enjoying both directions, you can make it as a panel. Please feel free to ask us for the mounting.)

Watery Sumi Ink - Split by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
This is a small artwork of 13.8" long and 6" wide, but the black of the Sumi ink gives it a strong presence. The white in the center that looks like a thin waterfall is attractive. Although it is abstract, it is somewhat concrete, and although the material is black Sumi ink and paper, it evokes colors. This exquisite balance is unique to ISHII Houtan. Not mounted. You can choose your favorite monotone frame by yourself. We recommend making it a small hanging scroll with white silk.

Watery Sumi Ink - Flying by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
If I said artworks created by ink bleeding are static, this work would be dynamic. I don't know how the calligrapher put the Sumi ink on this, but it looks like he didn't use a brush. The splash is called flying Sumi ink (Hiboku 飛墨), and the beauty of it is the result of a calligrapher's study. Backing only. 35 cm long and 35 cm wide. If you mount it on a wooden panel, it will also be lovely in the Scandinavian interior.

The refined sensibility of the calligrapher is reflected in every detail of the work. COSMOS - shine (昭) by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
A bluish silver light reminiscent of a quiet deep space. As the calligrapher says, it seems that "the empty space swayed, a dot was born..." and to began to shine. The title is "Shine (昭)". The Chinese character "昭" means bright, clear and conspicuous. Invited by meditation by staring at the brilliance which changes its shade depending on the viewing angle or time. COSMOS - project (突) by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
Great things never came from comfort zones. So I get out of where I am. The artist's thought might be like this. The title is "project (突)". "project" is derived from Middle French "jeter", which means "throw", and represents an activity that is "thrown" fast towards a goal. The word "jet" is also derived from the word. Ideal for conference rooms where you can discuss projects. Its brilliance which changes its shade depending on the viewing angle or time may flash your project. Not mounted. If you like, you can use a black mat on the black frame and make it float mount. Or you can collect several works in the same series. (We accept consultation about any mounting and the combination of works. Please feel free to contact us.)

COSMOS - window (窓) by ISHII Houtan

Surreal Person - Surreal Three-legged Race by ISHII Houtan
PURE Review
"Surreal person" series makes you feel as if you were peeking through someone's dreams. The title means the avant-garde movement, surrealism that occurred in the 1920s of course, but today, when we say "sur" in Japan, it means unique ideas that are constructed far higher situations than is possible in reality. Sometimes, a longtime relationship could be "sur", so perfect for a gift to a couple who get along well. The blue mineral pigment is used partly and shine depending on the viewing angle. Not mounted. Almost A4 size, 11.8-inch long and 8.3-inch wide. It is affixed to a 0.1-inch thick board, making it ideal for a floating frame. Also lovely if you put it in a colorful frame. (We have other works in this series, so if you need a set of several pieces, please feel free to ask us.)
